Socket Rpga 989 CPU List
A Socket rPGA989 CPU list is a starting point for identifying laptop processors, but the socket label alone cannot confirm compatibility. For systems confirmed to use Socket G2, options include socketed Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors from the Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge.

Identify the platform behind the rPGA989 label
rPGA989 appears on laptop socket assemblies and in hardware identification tools. Treat it as a clue about the connector, rather than a complete specification for the motherboard. The installed processor’s exact model and the laptop manufacturer’s service documentation are more useful when checking an upgrade.
Socket G1 is associated with rPGA988A and first-generation mobile Intel Core processors. Socket G2 uses rPGA988B and serves second-generation Sandy Bridge and third-generation Ivy Bridge mobile processors. Similar names and physical dimensions do not establish electrical or BIOS compatibility between platforms.
Intel’s third-generation mobile processor datasheet identifies rPGA988B as Socket G2. If your laptop uses an earlier platform, establish its supported CPU family before using the examples below.
Socket G2 CPU examples to check against your laptop
These Ivy Bridge processors provide a practical shortlist for a confirmed Socket G2 system. This is a selection of models, not a guarantee that every laptop with that socket supports them. Where a processor was offered in multiple packages, the replacement must be the socketed PGA version.
| Processor | Cores / threads | Base frequency | Maximum Turbo frequency | TDP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intel Core i3-3110M | 2 / 4 | 2.4 GHz | No Turbo Boost | 35 W |
| Intel Core i5-3230M | 2 / 4 | 2.6 GHz | 3.2 GHz | 35 W |
| Intel Core i5-3320M | 2 / 4 | 2.6 GHz | 3.3 GHz | 35 W |
| Intel Core i7-3520M | 2 / 4 | 2.9 GHz | 3.6 GHz | 35 W |
| Intel Core i7-3840QM | 4 / 8 | 2.8 GHz | 3.8 GHz | 45 W |
| Intel Core i7-3920XM | 4 / 8 | 2.9 GHz | 3.8 GHz | 55 W |
| Intel Core i7-3940XM | 4 / 8 | 3.0 GHz | 3.9 GHz | 55 W |
The Core i7-3520M is a dual-core i7, so the i7 name alone does not identify a quad-core upgrade. Intel’s Core i3-3110M specifications also show why package checks matter: that model exists in both PGA and BGA forms.
Maximum Turbo frequency is conditional, rather than a speed guaranteed across all cores during sustained work. Thermal design power, or TDP, helps assess cooling requirements; it does not describe total laptop power consumption or predict battery life.
Exclude processors from unrelated sockets
Some lists mix mobile and desktop processors or group CPUs by their Core branding. These entries should be excluded from an rPGA988B upgrade shortlist:
- The Core i7-3960X is a desktop processor for LGA2011, as documented in Intel’s LGA2011 processor datasheet.
- The Core i7-4700HQ is a fourth-generation mobile processor with an FCBGA1364 package, according to Intel’s package specifications. It is soldered to the motherboard and cannot serve as a socketed G2 replacement.
- AMD A-series processors use different platforms and are incompatible with these Intel sockets.
Check compatibility before buying a CPU
- Record the full laptop model, motherboard identifier, current CPU model and BIOS version. A laptop range may contain several motherboard configurations.
- Find the manufacturer’s service manual and supported processor information for that exact configuration. Check whether the CPU is removable and whether the proposed model is explicitly supported.
- Confirm the chipset and processor generation. Sharing Socket G2 does not guarantee that a Sandy Bridge laptop can run an Ivy Bridge processor.
- Check BIOS requirements. If the manufacturer specifies an update for the replacement CPU, follow its update procedure while the original processor is still installed.
- Compare the replacement’s TDP with the supported cooling and power configuration. A higher-power factory option may have used a different heatsink, fan or power adaptor.
- Verify the seller’s exact processor model and package, inspect the pins and check the return terms before ordering.
Check memory limits separately. The CPU’s memory controller specification does not guarantee that a laptop can use that capacity: available slots, motherboard design and BIOS support also matter.
Choose an upgrade that addresses the bottleneck
Everyday tasks and light multitasking
A supported dual-core Core i5 may be a useful step up from an entry-level processor. Moving between similar dual-core models can produce a smaller improvement, so compare the exact CPUs rather than relying on the i3, i5 or i7 badge.
CPU rendering and sustained processing
A supported quad-core processor can help applications that distribute work across more cores. Its value depends on the workload and the laptop’s ability to maintain performance under load. A 55 W Extreme Edition model needs explicit platform support; its higher clock speed alone is insufficient reason to choose it.
Slow storage or limited graphics performance
If storage or memory is causing delays, a CPU replacement may leave the main problem unresolved. For gaming, check graphics performance as well. The guide to identifying a graphics card with Command Prompt can help establish which GPU is installed. If you are also assessing a desktop with that card, consult the Gigabyte D33006 graphics card specifications for its separate graphics requirements.
For further component guidance, browse the computer hardware articles.
Start by finding your exact laptop’s service manual and checking one candidate CPU against its supported processor and cooling configurations before ordering.

FAQ
What else should you know before buying?
- What do I need before starting?
- Read the requirements and confirm the edition first; the steps assume the machine is compatible.
- How do I know the licence is genuine?
- Activate on Microsoft's servers and check Settings, System, Activation. A working activation is the test.
- Is this a subscription?
- Keys sold here are one-time lifetime licences. Microsoft 365 plans are billed by Microsoft instead.
- What if the key fails?
- Email hi@ms.codes with the order number and a screenshot. Replacement or refund applies within 30 days.
